ABOUT THE HOUSE COMMUNITY SERVICE AND SUSTAINABILITY RECOGNITION PROGRAM

What is it?
President Christ initiated the Community Service and Sustainability Recognition Program in the Fall 2005 as a way of insuring Smith’s continued dedication to the larger community. The House Community Service and Sustainability Recognition Program encourages house communities to be involved in community service and sustainability projects on and off campus. Houses are also encouraged to involve faculty and staff throughout the process and spend time reflecting on their experiences as a community. Houses that participate create an end of year portfolio describing what they have done, how they have learned through the process and the overall impact of their projects on the larger community as well as their house community.

House Community Service and Recognition Program LogoThe Recognition
A committee of faculty and staff review each house’s end of year portfolio and determines which house or houses should be recognized as outstanding houses. There is $2500 to be given to the recognized houses which the house communities then donate to non profit organizations. Houses are also recognized at a reception at the end of the year and at Convocation at the beginning of the year.

How do you get your house involved?
Talk to your house president, residence life staff and/or your SOS representative. Get people excited about community service and sustainability and start doing projects. Remember to record what you are doing so that you have information to put in your end of year portfolio. Throughout the year you will receive a monthly newsletter updating you on important information associated with the program, but other than that it is up to you and your house community what you do.

The First Step!
If you have questions or if you want to register your house to participate e-mail Hannah Durrant or Tiertza-Leah Schwartz. You can read more information about the program at: http://www.smith.edu/sao/reslife/hcsp.php
