Refrigerators

Lightweight refrigerators of up to 3.5 cubic feet with an ENERGY STAR label may be used in student rooms. Some students buy portable refrigerators and keep them here for all four years, storing them during the summer at one of the commercial storage companies. Portable refrigerators can also be rented, for details contact Building Services, extension 2400. For more information go to: http://www.smith.edu/physplant/buildingservices/bldgservreshall.php.

Because they run 24/7, a mini-refrigerator is often the #1 user of electricity in a room. They can use upwards of 400 kWh a year, which will cost $35 and generate almost 300 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions.

Before renting or purchasing a fridge, please consider the need and whether you will have access to a shared refrigerator in a common area. Also consider what you will do with the unit at the end of the year. Sharing a fridge is one of the best ways to save money and energy.

In fall 2003 ENERGY STAR began labeling compact refrigerators that use 20-30% less energy than the federal standard. These can typically save $10 and 90 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions a year.
