Students have freely associated themselves with
Smith College in a relationship based on mutual trust, personal respect and individual integrity.
Dedicated to the advancement of learning and to the pursuit of truth, they shall foster the process
of free inquiry and the exchange of ideas and criticism while maintaining respect for the opinions
of others. They shall demonstrate respect for all members of the Smith community as individuals,
avoid exploitation of fellow community members for personal advantage and make every reasonable
effort to foster honest academic conduct. (This statement was ratified by the Student Senate on
November 18, 1988.)
Smith College is a multicultural community,
founded on mutual respect and appreciation of differences. Expressions of disrespect for the
background or culture of any person undermine civil dialogue and erode community.
