FIRST-YEAR SEMINARS

Smith has been offering a program of first-year seminars since 1998. Each fall, approximately 20-30 seminars are offered to first-year students only and in limited size classes. These courses, some of which are team-taught, are designed to introduce new students to the excitement of intellectual discovery in a college environment. Each seminar focuses on a particular research interest of a Smith faculty member(s). The first-year seminars provide a solid academic foundation for a Smith education, including a focus on the development of writing, public speaking, critical thinking, class discussion, group work, library and quantitative skills. Most of the first-year seminars also satisfy the college's first-year writing intensive requirement. The offerings for 2009 are posted here.

Any questions about or requests for additional information about first-year seminars can be directed to Susan Etheredge, director of first year seminars, (413) 585-3256, or sethered@smith.edu.
