Orientation for all new students entering in Fall 2012 will begin on Thursday, August 30 and continue through Wednesday, September 5. Classes begin on Thursday, September 6.
Orientation is an important start to your Smith journey! During the week before the start of classes, all new students, including first year students; transfer, visiting and exchange students; and Ada Comstock Scholars, gather to learn about the college and get to know each other.
We strive to make Orientation fun and relaxing. You can expect to meet interesting and diverse members of the Smith community, including other new students, returning students, faculty, staff and administrators. You will also meet with your faculty adviser. You’ll be given vast amounts of information that will help you be a successful Smith student. You will also participate in an Orientation group, which are interest based and small in number. This will allow new students to form connections with other students, faculty and staff that will enhance their personal and academic success while at Smith.
All new students are required to participate in a summer reading project prior to joining us in the fall during orientation; new students will participate in discussion groups and other activities involving the reading, often including a presentation by the author. Information about the summer reading for 2012 can be found here.
While the orientation schedule is quite fluid until midsummer, we recognize that access to that schedule as early as possible is important to many of our students and their parents. A draft of the orientation schedule will be posted on May 1st for students and parents who want to get an idea of the activities held during orientation. While we make every effort to ensure the final schedule includes all events and is as accurate as we can make it, as with any large event, last minute changes beyond our control may occur. You will receive the final schedule when you arrive on campus for Central Check-In.
