RESPONSE TO THE EVENTS OF SEPTEMBER 11, 2001

The entire Smith community is shocked and saddened at the events of September 11 and the cruelty and cowardice of the terrorist acts. At tragic moments like this, it is important to remember that Smith is a supportive community that includes not only those presently on campus but thousands of alumnae around the world. Our hearts go out to all who have suffered losses during this difficult period.

In the aftermath of the tragedies, the college has marshaled a variety of resources to provide support for students, faculty and staff. Opportunities for sharing concerns and addressing the anxiety and shock that has resulted from the terrorist attacks in New York, Washington, D.C. and Pennsylvania have included an all-college meeting, ongoing open hours at the counseling service and the Helen Hills Hills Chapel and elsewhere on campus, a chapel vigil during the evening of September 11, a variety of informal programs in student residences and more formal panel discussions and lectures that will continue over the coming weeks.

Acting President John Connolly has requested that information about Smith students, staff and faculty who suffer losses of or serious injury to family members as a result of the events of September 11 be reported to his office so that appropriate support can be offered.
