Interterm Housing

All active students may participate in interterm courses. Availability of housing during interterm depends on the student's residential status in the fall prior to interterm or the spring following interterm.

Students on Campus Both Semesters

Students residing on campus for both the fall and spring semester will be provided housing in January regardless of enrollment in an interterm course. Students need not seek additional permission from the Office of Residence Life to return to campus, and there is no additional cost.

Students Away from Campus Spring Semester

Students going abroad or going on leave in the spring semester must vacate their residential room on the date houses close at the end of the fall semester.

Exceptions

Please note: Students participating in these programs must vacate their room one week prior to new incoming students' arrival on campus. They are responsible for finding alternative housing for the final week if necessary.

Exclusions

The following conditions do not entitle a student who is away in the spring to remain in their fall housing assignment for interterm:

Students Away From Campus Fall Semester

Students who were on leave from the college during the fall semester are permitted to move into their housing assignment on the same day as incoming new students (typically three days before spring semester classes begin).

Exceptions

Students who are permitted by the Office of Residence Life to move into their housing assignment early (due to one of the below exceptions) can return to campus on the designated day that houses open for interterm.

Students who register for a spring semester Five College course which starts prior to Smith classes will be granted permission to arrive on campus one day prior to the day the class starts. You must contact the Office of Residence Life at reslife@smith.edu.

Exclusions

The following conditions do not entitle a student who was away in the fall semester to move into their housing assignment early:

Students Away From Campus Both Semesters

Students who are studying abroad or are away from Smith for both the fall and spring semesters will not be provided housing on campus during interterm. Students who choose to participate in interterm courses—either for credit or not for credit—must find alternative housing accommodations during this time.

Readmitted Students

Students readmitted to the college are permitted to return to campus on the day new incoming students can arrive on campus (typically three days before spring semester classes begin). There are no exceptions to readmitted students arriving early.

January Graduates

January graduates must vacate residential rooms on the date houses close at the end of the fall semester. Only January graduates who are completing a thesis and have permission from their class dean are permitted to stay past this date. Honors thesis writers must vacate their rooms one week before incoming new students arrive on campus for spring semester.
