Religious Life: All is Possible
An Interview with Christine Beaubrun '12J
To which organization do you belong? How long have you been involved?
I am a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Org and have been involved since my arrival here in 2009.
What motivated you to join?
I was born and raised a Seventh-day Adventist and so I wanted to continue my religious service and obligations even while attending Smith College.
What role do you think spirituality should play on Smith campus?
I speak from experience when I say being a student at Smith is intense, especially since everyone is fiercely competitive and wants to be the best at everything and anything. Although there is nothing wrong with being ambitious and competitive, this feeling can quickly become overwhelming. Whenever this happens, I look up to God and his word to calm me. Spirituality should play a significant role in Smith because on a campus where students are constantly busy with classes and extracurricular activities, it is very soothing to know that the Sabbath is a day to divert attention away from myself and dedicate my services to God.
What distinguishes Smith from other spiritual communities you have belonged to or observed?
The small difference between the spiritual community back home in Brooklyn and the one here at Smith are the type of members. Here at Smith, you'll find students instead of parents with children but overall, no matter what the age group, we gather to worship and serve Jesus Christ.
Have you had any funny, bizarre, or amazing experiences with your organization?
The weekend before Thanksgiving break, the org and I went on a spiritual retreat. It was the most amazing moment for all of us because we each felt as if the retreat was designed specifically for us given the turbulent week we had. Returning back to school, I had never felt so energized.
What have you learned about yourself and your spirituality at Smith?
Since being a student at Smith and being an active member in this org, I have learned just how dedicated I am to my religion and its practices, as well as sharing this faith with others around me.
If you had to sum up your spiritual experience here in 5 words or less, what would they be?
Through Christ, all is possible!
