Final papers are due
by the date set by the instructor. Instructors may
not set deadlines beyond the last day of the examination
period. Students are required to know when written
work is due at the end of the semester and to submit it on
time and in person, not by friendly messenger or mail. Extensions
for final work due at the end of the semester may not be
granted beyond the end of the examination period except in
cases of illness or emergency authorized by the class dean,
not by the instructor. If arrangements are
made to submit papers by mail, students must keep copies
of the papers
and must send them by certified mail, return receipt requested. If
by email or fax, it is the student’s responsibility
to check that the work submitted has been received by the
instructor.
Final
examinations are administered during a four-day examination
period at the end of each semester. The
instructor determines the type of examination to be given.
Scheduled
examinations are given in courses when slides, dictation
or listening comprehension are required. Such examinations
are administered during the regular examination period at
the end of the semester and may be taken only at the scheduled
time. The schedule is prepared by the registrar and the exam
is administered by the instructor.
Self-scheduled
exams are administered by the registrar during predetermined
periods at the end of the semester. A student may elect in
which period she wants to take each exam. Exams are picked
up at designated distribution centers after showing a picture
ID and an Exam Card and must be returned to the same center
no more than two hours and 20 minutes from the time they are
received by the student. Extra time taken to write an exam
is considered a violation of the Academic Honor Code and will
be reported to the Academic Honor Board.
Take-home
exams are administered by the instructor. All such
examinations are ‘open-book’ with no restriction
on writing time except for the submission deadline set by
the instructor. Further information is posted in the Faculty Code Appendix G.
No scheduled
or self-scheduled examination may be taken outside the regular
examination period without prior permission of the administrative
board. Written requests must be made to the administrative
board through the class dean (not to individual faculty members).
Requests to take final examinations early will not be considered;
therefore, travel plans must be made accordingly.
A student who is late for an
exam may write for the remaining time in the examination
period but may
not have additional
time. The Administrative Board has ruled that a grade
of E shall be given for examinations missed because of carelessness,
oversleeping, misreading the schedule, poor planning, et
cetera.
If a student is too ill to write
an examination, she should report to Health Service before
the examination
is scheduled
to begin. In case of illness which occurs after an
examination has begun, the student should go directly from
the examination center to Health Service, not to her house. In
the case of a scheduled examination, she should leave her
examination materials with the instructor if he/she is present,
or on the desk in the examination room. Students taking
self-scheduled examinations should leave their examination
materials with the supervisor of the center where the exam
was received. In both instances, the Health Service
will notify the registrar and class dean that the student
is ill and unable to complete the exam during that period.
For
students granted an official extension by the class dean,
make-up examinations will be administered by the registrar’s
office and must be completed by the deadline set by the class
deans.
Five College students enrolled
in courses at Smith College must abide by the above regulations
and schedule
of examinations
and are governed by the Smith Honor Code. Five College
students requiring extensions for reasons of health or emergency
must contact the Class Dean’s Office at Smith College. |
