Applications
to take a course through the Five College Interchange are
now processed electronically through BannerWeb. Students
interested in participating in the interchange should follow
the procedures outlined below.
Students
must adhere to the following steps in order to ensure registration
in a Five College course. Should the request for registration
not be accepted for any reason, the registrar's office at
Smith will contact the student.
|
1 |
Search
for a course: Consult the Five
College course guides to find a course at one of
the other colleges. |
|
2 |
Check
the approved list: Not all Five College courses
are approved for credit toward the Smith degree.
A list of previously approved
courses is published each semester. Courses
not on this list will be reviewed by the registrar
at the time the course request is submitted through
BannerWeb. Students may request prior approval
by submitting a course description or syllabus to
the registrar's office for review. Normally,
only those courses falling within the field of liberal
arts will be approved. See our transfer
credit guidelines for more clarification.
Please
note: Some introductory language courses
require completion of a full year (normally two
semesters) before credit is granted. Consult our
registration
guidelines for more information.

Obtain
your adviser's approval: Your adviser must
approve your registration in a Five College Course as
part of your program for the term. By using the
BannerWeb online registration system, students do so
with the understanding that they have met and consulted
with their advisers about their course programs and
have processed any course selections or changes in accordance
with the adviser-approved plans for course registration.

Complete
the online application form through BannerWeb:
A link to the online Five College application form
can be found at the bottom of the BannerWeb course
registration page. According to the procedures
for registration in Smith courses, access to the online
Interchange application is scheduled by class standing
and must be completed by the same deadlines.
Please note: The submission of a
Five College application requires the exchange of
personal information with the other campus, including
the social security number. All information
is released to the host registrar only and is kept
confidential.

Signatures:
If the course requires permission or you are registering
at the start of the semester, you are required to
print a copy of the application receipt form, obtain
the instructor's signature and submit it to the Smith's
registrar's office before your registration will be
processed. Failure to do so will prevent your
application from moving forward. |

Once your
request has been processed, the course will appear on
your BannerWeb schedule pending notification from the
host school. If you are not accepted
into the course, you will be notified by the Smith Registrar's
Office by email and your registration will be cancelled.

Before
finalizing your registration, please note the following:
Independent
studies: A special
studies form (signed by the instructor and appropriate
Smith department chair) is required and must be
submitted with the interchange registration form.
Students should check with the host campus to fulfill
any additional requirements for registration.
Grading Option: If a student
intends to enroll in a Five College course under
the S/U or P/F option, she must declare that option
at the host campus by their deadlines. Smith will
record the grade submitted by the host institution.

Students
can use BannerWeb to drop Five College courses and by following
the usual procedures for
dropping courses. Students may also drop courses by
submitting an approved course change form to the Smith registrar's
office by the appropriate deadline.
