The Spinelli Center staff are available to students from any discipline for help, advice, or quantitative or statistical counseling. Each of us is also available for appointments: to make an appointment, please click here!

Q-Tutors and Calculus Counselor

Calculus Counselor, Patricia Sipe:

Q-tutors hold open drop-in hours in the Spinelli Center. Depending on which Q-tutor you see, she might be able to help with the quantitative and mathematical parts of economics, engineering, chemistry, physics, statistics, etc.

  • Bethany is a senior Engineering Science major who has taken MTH 114, MTH 212, PHY 117, CHM 118, PHY 210, Introductory Statistics, as well as the engineering core courses.
  • Cheryl is a math post-bac student. She majored in Economics and Latin American Studies at Smith. She has taken--and would love to chat about--introductory micro and macro (ECO 150 and 153), intermediate micro and macro (ECO 250 and 253), introductory stats (ECO 220), econometrics (ECO 240), linear algebra (MTH 211), calculus III (MTH 212), and analysis (MTH 281).
  • Clare is a senior Chemistry major with a Culture, Health, and Science 5-College Certificate. She has taken calculus II, MTH/SDS 220, PHY 117, BIO 150/151, 152, and BIO 202 and completed the Chemistry major.
  • Dakota is a senior double major in Engineering Science & Economics. She has taken Calc II, III, Linear Algebra, MTH 220, PHY 117 & 118, PHY 210, ECO 150 & 153, ECO 250 & 253, as well as the engineering core courses.
  • Farah is a senior Economics and Mathematics major. She has done all prerequisite math and economics courses and can help with MTH 111, 112, 153, 212, ECO 150/153. She has also taken ECO 220, 250 and 220. 
  • Liam is a senior and double major in physics and mathematics. He has taken Calc I through Advanced Calc, Discrete Mathematics, Linear Algebra, and Modern Algebra for the math major. For the physics major he has taken Phy 117, Phy 118, Math Methods (210), Modern Physics (315), Thermal Physics (319), E&M (318), and Electronics (240).
  • Mari is a senior Economics major, Mathematics minor, who has taken Introductory Micro and Macro (ECO 150 and 153), Intermediate Micro and Macro (ECO 250 and 253), Introductory Statistics (ECO 220), Econometrics (ECO 240), Linear Algebra (MTH 211), Calculus II and III (MTH 112 and 212),  Introduction to Real Analysis (MTH 281), and Logic (LOG 100).
  • Riley is a Junior Math and Economics double major.  She has taken Calculus I,II,and III; Discrete Math; Linear Algebra; Introductory Macro and Micro-economics; Intermediate Macro and Micro-economics;  Game Theory; Intro Stats/Probability ;Corporate Finance; and Behavioral Economics.  She is currently taking graph theory, multiple regression, international finance, and econometrics.

 

Biology/Biochemistry

Anna is available for help with BCH 252 in Ford Hall room 246. Wencong is available in the Spinelli Center for help with BIO 155 statistics. She is also available in Burton 301 as a Stats TA on Sunday evenings.

Math TA's

The Math TA's are available Sunday - Thursday evenings 7-9 pm in the Math Forum on the third floor of Burton Hall. The TA's are eager to welcome you and to support your progress in mathematics.

TA's can help you with difficulties and questions in the courses: MTH 102, 111, 112, 114, 153, or 211.
A particular TA, Jasmine, for MTH 153, Discrete Math, is available on Sunday and Tuesday nights in the Math Forum.
For help with MTH 212, Calculus III, see the Math TA's Julia and/or Elise (or Mariya). You can also see the Calculus Counselor in the Spinelli Center.

Students in other courses using statistical methods (such as PSY 192, SOC 202) are welcome to contact the Statistics Counselor.

  • Lisa is a senior Psychology and Education double major. She can help with Math, Psychology, Sociology, and Government Statistics as well as Research Methods.

  • Alicia is a junior psychology major who has taken introductory statistics, Research Design and Analysis, and Multiple Regression. She is familiar with R Studio and research design, and she can assist with topics from MTH 220, 290, 291.
  • Emma is a Sociology major and a SDS minor, she has taken Introduction to Statistics, Quantitative Research Methods, and Multiple Regression as well as her research assistant work with cleaning survey data. She can help with introductory statistics and regression, survey analysis, and programming in R and Stata.
  • Jessica is a math postbac who taught high school math through Teach For America in New Mexico. She decided in her second year of teaching that she was interested in statistics. Now, she is taking a full load of statistics courses and applying to graduate school. She has taken MTH 290 (Research Design) and MTH 301 (Research in Statistics) at Smith and introductory statistics at another school. This spring, she is enrolled in Machine Learning, Multiple Regression, and Mathematical Statistics. She would be happy to think through any of these courses with you and help you program in R.
  • Wencong (Priscilla) is a sophomore mathematics (statistics track) and biology double major. She has taken introductory statistics (MTH 220) as well as intermediate statistics (MTH 291) and can assist with related topics such as introductory statistics, multiple regression, and research design and analysis. She can also help with MTH 153 and biological data analysis.
  • Sara is a math post-bac who minored in math as an undergrad and took many statistics courses in school for public policy. She is happy to help students with introductory and intermediate statistics questions. She is proficient in Stata, SAS, and SPSS and is learning R this year.
