| STAFF Director Catherine McCune, former visiting professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Smith, is the center’s inaugural director. McCune received her doctoral degree in mathematics at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She came to Smith College after post-doctoral positions at the Technische Universitaet Berlin and the University of Connecticut at Storrs where she pursued research in the theory of minimal surfaces. Quantitative Skills Counselor Karyn Nelson is the center's Quantitative Skills Counselor. Karyn received her B.A. in Environmental Studies and Mathematics from Connecticut College, her M.A. in Physical Geography from Boston University, and her M.S. in Biological Sciences from Smith College. She also has a G.I.S. certificate from Keene State College. While at Boston University, Karyn was a lab instructor for Physical Geography and GIS courses. Prior to coming to Smith, she was an academic and technical student aide at Wellesley College. Statistics Counselor Sharla Alegria is the center's Statistics Counselor. Sharla received her B. A. in Sociology from Vassar College and her M. A. at the University of South Florida, also in Sociology with a certificate in Advanced Feminist Studies. She is currently a Ph.D. student in Sociology and a certificate student in Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Sharla has worked as an instructor or teaching assistant of statistics at both the undergraduate and graduate level. She has also worked on data collection, management and analysis for research grants funded by the National Science Foundation and the Nation Cancer Institute. |
