REPORTING A CRIME

The Department of Public Safety is available 24 hours a day to assist members of the Smith College Community, visitors and guests. Officers respond to situations that include but are not limited to:

sexual assault

sexual harrasment

domestic violence

assault or assault and battery

theft of college or personal property

suspicious persons or activities in campus buildings or grounds

safety or security of persons or buildings

civil rights violations and bias-related incidents

motor vehicle accidents

medical emergencies.

Also, any situation that might require Northampton fire or ambulance services should be reported immediately to the public safety emergency number.

How to Report A Campus Crime

If you witness a crime or suspicious activity on campus, immediately call the Department of Public Safety by dialing extension 800 from regular campus phones or by activating any blue-light emergency phone. Give pertinent details you know, including location, nature of the incident, descriptions of persons involved, etc.

The college's response to reports of criminal action depends on the nature of the situation. When a request for assistance is received, public safety officers are dispatched immediately. Investigative procedures begin, involving the Department of Public Safety, the director of institutional diversity (if the incident involves a civil rights violation) and, if necessary, local law enforcement agencies. The director of Department of Public Safety counsels crime victims on both internal and external means of redress, and when appropriate refers victims to the victim/witness unit at the Hampshire County district attorney’s office.

Incidents are entered in the campus Public Safety log. In many instances, written statements are taken and incident and investigative reports are filed. Criminal activities on campus are reported to the Northampton Police as a matter of policy. Blue "alert" notices are posted across campus to inform college community members of serious crimes considered to be threats to the community. Please read these blue flyers when you see them posted.
