Public Safety Alert: March 13, 2009

State Police and police from the nearby towns of Amherst, Hadley and Sunderland are looking into reports from a few young women about suspicious behavior by a male driving a small, light-colored vehicle. Authorities received information about the driver approaching the women while they were jogging or walking roadside, and attempting to engage them in conversation. The man has been described as having short cropped hair and possibly a goatee.

If approached, do not engage the person, but walk or run away and contact authorities. If you are able, pre-program emergency numbers into your cell phone and carry it with you. Smith's Public Safety Office is open 24 hours a day at (413) 585-2490 to provide assistance.
