We have reached an important milestone in our
financial planning, as Smith responds to the economic challenges facing
every sector of our economy. Our task, as a community, has been to reconcile our
high aspirations with the financial realities we face and to develop a sequence of
cost-saving strategies that will assure Smith’s strength, resilience and bright
future.
Advising
me on
the development of our plan was the Committee on Mission and Priorities (CMP) and
the Advisory Committee on Resource Allocation (ACRA), both of which are comprised
of faculty, staff and students and chaired by me. As we considered the tough decisions
about how we use our resources and set priorities, we communicated regularly,
through this site, through campus forums, and in other ways, to ensure that we relied
on all of our collective intelligence to make the best decisions possible.
Throughout this challenging process, I
have been encouraged by how imaginatively and wisely faculty, staff and students
have been reflecting on what is integral to the Smith experience and what, in a changing
higher education landscape, might be re-examined and re-envisioned. With courage,
creativity and common purpose, we will arrive at a renewed and financially sustainable
path to educational excellence.
