The Poetry Center at Smith College was founded in 1997 with the goals of bringing distinguished poets to the College, creating a video archive of their readings, and promoting an appreciation of poetry in the larger community through outreach to schools. The Poetry Center celebrated Smith's long and illustrious relationship with such world-renouned poets as Sylvia Plath, W. H. Auden, Richard Wilbur, and Adrienne Rich. |

Author and editor of more than twenty volumes, including poetry, fiction, and anthologies for young readers, Naomi Shihab Nye has won many distinguished awards, including Lannan and Guggenheim Fellowships, and a Lavan Award from the Academy of American Poets. Her collection 19 Varieties of Gazelle was a finalist for the National Book Award. Her work has been presented on National Public Radio on such as A Prarie Home Companion and The Writer's Almanac, and she has been featured on two PBS poetry specials. |
