THE GLADYS KREIBLE DELMAS FOUNDATION, which a decade ago provided our very young Poetry Center with a grant to underwrite readings by poets of color, has stepped forward again. This time, the foundation made a grant of $10,000 to fund summer internship opportunities for students in our young Poetry Concentration. Five of our brightest and best were able to contribute sweat equity and to acquire valuable skills at six lively and essential organizations: Jackyn Majewski, class of 2013 POET’S HOUSE - “a national poetry library and literary center that invites poets and the public to step into the living tradition of poetry.” (Spring 11) MERIDIANS: feminism, race, transnationalism - “a feminist, interdisciplinary journal whose goal is to provide a forum for the finest scholarship and creative work by and about women of color in U.S. and international contexts.” Amanda Picardi, class of 2012 BOOKLYN ARTIST ALLIANCE - “works tirelessly to put books in the hands of the people and to encourage the people’s hands to make more books.” Hannah Shadrick, class of 2013 SPARKS FROM THE ANVIL – “an audio archive of deep and delightful conversations between interviewer Christian McEwen and some of Smith’s most distinguished visiting poets.” Kathryn Shoro, class of 2013 HORTON TANK GRAPHICS - “dedicated to continuing the tradition of fine letterpress printing… and the training of the next generation of letterpress printers.” Janan Scott, class of 2013 POETRY CENTER AT SMITH COLLEGE – “devoted to bringing the world of contemporary poetry to campus and the surrounding community, creating a vibrant culture of poetry throughout Smith College, and radiating out into the wider world.” We’re hugely grateful to the Delmas Foundation for their generous gift—as we are grateful to all who support and share the fervor of our mission. Your enthusiasm for poetry and your continued support make for a winning combination!
