Since retiring from teaching fourth graders at the Baldwin School in Bryn Mawr PA, Susan Whereat has been taking occasional poetry writing workshops. While in Gabarone, Botswana, when her husband was working there for several months, she loved the feedback and collegiality of a Gotham Poetry Writing course online.

I settle on our hi-rise deck
with a cold pinot gris.

Close by seven baby spiders
practice their weavings
each on his own loom—
open spaces between balcony rails.

Above them a dry carcass
dangles from a wisp.

When deep dusk conceals my mountain
the baby spiders scoot up high
tucking in under the top railing
like mountaineers asleep in hammocks
slung on pitons for the night.

Next day. No trace.
They've broken camp.
