I am writing to invite concept papers from
the campus community for specific initiatives to advance the directions that we identified
last spring in the first stage of the strategic planning process. You can find a
description of the strategic directions in the May report of the Committee on Mission
and Priorities. We are holding a series of roundtable discussion in September to
explore the strategic directions in depth and to identify fertile ground for initiatives.
The initial deadline for concept papers is October 16,
2006. More in the nature of a letter of intent than a proposal, they should not be
long -- two pages at most.
We are inviting submission of such proposals in order
to identify ideas with the greatest potential for achieving the goals of our strategic
planning process and ways in which these ideas might fit together. In the second
half of fall semester, the Committee on Mission and Priorities and, when appropriate,
the Committee on Academic Priorities, will review the papers submitted, creating
work groups and subcommittees as needed to develop ideas, or combinations of ideas,
that seem most promising. We are looking for proposals that specifically address
one or more of the planning directions, that promote student learning and the development
of critical capacities, that are cross-cutting and integrative in nature, that build
upon existing strengths at Smith, that advance Smith's reputation and visibility,
and that make thoughtful and creative use of existing funding and staffing resources
as well as potential new funding. When developed, these initiatives will form the
basis of a strategic plan, which will be circulated to the community in draft form
in the winter of 2007.
To submit a concept paper, please send an electronic
copy to Rebecca Lindsey in my office
by October 16.
Sincerely,
Carol T. Christ |
