Smith College is accredited by the Commission
on Institutions of Higher Education of the New England Association of Schools and
Colleges (NEASC). Smith has been accredited by this organization since 1929, and
undergoes a full reaccreditation review every 10 years.
The 2007 review included the preparation of a report
detailing the college's compliance with a series of 11 standards, a complementary
document describing our planning efforts in a few areas of special emphasis, and
a multi-day visit to Smith from a reaccreditation team comprised of representatives
from peer colleges and universities. Smith received formal notice of continuation
of accreditation in May 2008.
The NEASC visiting team that conducted the
college's decennial accreditation review was on campus September 23-26, 2007. Students,
faculty and staff were invited to two gatherings with the visiting team. An open
meeting September 25 gave members of the Smith community a chance to speak directly
with team members. As the team completed its campus visit, they presented a preliminary
report of its assessment on September 26.

Smith’s reaccreditation coincides with the strategic
planning process underway, and the special emphases sections draw heavily from those
discussions and initiatives. The documents present the opportunity for Smith to describe
what it does, appraise how well we accomplish our goals, and make projections about
our future course in important areas.
