COURSE PACKETS

Central Services is the on-campus source for the printing of all your course materials. We will obtain all copyright permissions when necessary. We will print and bind your course reader, and deliver them to the Grecourt Bookstore in the Campus Center where they will be sold to students.

Copyright permissions must be obtained for most copying used in classrooms. Please be aware of the official college policies pertaining to the fair use of copyrighted materials, available at the following link: Smith College Copyright Information

The cost of copyrights is included in the final total cost of the course reader. Please note that the number and length of materials used in the reader can add up quickly. The final cost of the reader is usually in the $50-70 range, but can be as high as $150.

MESSAGE TO THE FACULTY LISTSERVE, JANUARY 2008

MESSAGE:

RE: Course Pack & Copyright

Central Services recently notified us that Follett, the bookstore vendor, will no longer sell course packs without the necessary documents showing the appropriate copyright permissions. In order to be in compliance with copyright law and to provide our bookstore vendor with assurances about copyright law observance, the Offices of the Provost and General Counsel have worked with Central Services to implement some important changes in the way that they process your requests for course packs or duplication of copyrighted material for classroom use.

1. Copying material for which the faculty member has received the permissions
If you have received written permission to copy material for a course pack or for classroom distribution, please bring a copy of the permission/s to Central Services when you make your request for copies or for preparation of a course pack. These permissions now need to be kept on file by Central Services for all material they copy.

2. Central Services secured permissions
If course pack material is brought to Central Services without permissions, Central Services staff will secure permissions before making copies. Any item for which Central Services has not been able to secure permission to copy will not be included in the course pack. Central Services will notify you of those items, and you may make those items available by using the course reserves process with the library. If the materials have not received permission because of inadequate time to complete the request (i.e. permission is probable, but you are waiting for contact from the author or publisher), Central Services will continue to seek the permission and advise you when it is given or denied. You may then instruct Central Services, if you still wish, to have the materials copied and distributed.

3. Substitute materials
Central Services will also work with you if you choose to select substitute material when permission to copy is not received in time to copy your original requested material.

The goal of Central Services is to assist you in putting together your course pack in the most efficient manner possible, while staying in compliance with copyright law. Course pack deadlines are posted on the Central Services web site and are generally mid-November for spring semester and mid-July for the fall Semester.

If you have any questions or concerns about course pack or copying procedures please contact Laurie Petrie, Central Services Supervisor at ext. 2243, or Danielle Carr Ramdath, Associate Dean of the Faculty at ext. 3017.
