Building Services in the ACADEMIC & ADMINISTRATIVE BUILDINGS
In the Academic and Administrative buildings, custodians support you, the faculty, and guests of the college by providing a healthy, safe and comfortable educational experience. Custodial staffing covers the work hours from 5AM to 11:30PM consisting of 3 main shifts. Minimal staffing on the weekends and holidays.
Custodial Staff positions and pictures can be looked at in the Campus Directory. All Custodians will be found under the Department of Physical Plant.
Custodians working different shifts may be contacted through their supervisor. Please click on this site for more information: Building and Residential Supervisor Contacts
Please remember that custodians are working in many buildings after the buildings are closed. You are also reminded that if you are working in a building after hours that you should have a classmate or "buddy", etc. You are in violations of the Judicial Code if you are working alone. It is for your safety. Refer to your Smith College Student Handbook.

Information about cleaning products
In the cleaning of academic and administrative buildings we use the most effective cleaning products that we can find, that are safe for you and the staff using them. As we deplete our present inventory, new products are reviewed and "Green Chemicals" are tested and used. Training and education of our staff is an ongoing process as cleaning products change and are introduced into the operation. We are testing new chemicals for their effectiveness and are using "Green" window washing, floor cleaners, general purpose cleaners, and a few disinfectants in several areas of our operation. For more detailed information, click here.
Trash and recycling bins are located in individual offices and in public areas throughout the academic and administrative buildings. Blue waste baskets in your office is for paper to be recycled.
Gray waste baskets are for waste. Make sure that you label specific items to be trashed or to be recycled for all items that do not fit into your baskets. Do not leave valuable paperwork on top of waste baskets or recycle containers because the custodian may mistake these items as trash or recyclable.
Cardboard should be separate from paper. Any paper associated with food or restrooms is considered trash, not recyclable.
Bottles and cans can be deposited at central common areas in labeled containers. When in doubt check with your custodian, or supervisor.
Used batteries should be separated and are recycled. There is a central box for batteries in your building or contact your building liaison.
