CLEANING PRODUCTS

In the cleaning of your academic and administrative spaces we use the most effective cleaning products that we can find, that are also safe for you and our staff.  All cleaning products presently being used within Building Services are identified as being non-carcenogenic.  As we deplete our present inventory, cleaning products are reviewed and "Green Chemicals"  are sought after as they become available.  Training and education of our staff is an ongoing process as cleaning products change and are introduced into the operation.  We are testing new products for their effectiveness and are using "Green" window washing, floor cleaners, general purpose cleaners, and a few disinfectants in several areas of our operation.  We will continue in this effort to maximize "Green Chemicals" to protect you, our staff and the environment.  It is a continuous process that is reviewed yearly.

New and full time staff receive reoccurring training on chemical safety, use and disposal.  Smith College has a Hazard Communication Program following the guideline of OSHA Hazard Communication Standard, 29 CFR 1910.1200.   Hazard Communication Program044

The Smith College Hazardous Communication Program lists Department Coordinators that are using chemicals,  a listing of Material Safety Data Sheets on each chemical we use, Container Labeling requirements, Information and Training, Non Routine Task training and responsibilities of outside contractors.

Building and Residential Services are monitored by the Physical Plant Health and Safety Coordinator in Residences and Academic and Administrative Buildings.

The Science Building with chemicals used for research and education are monitored by the Manager of Inventory and Regulatory Affairs

Academic and Administrative buildings maintain an inventory of all of their chemicals and Material Safety Data Sheets.  These are made available to anyone.

Residences also maintain an inventory of all of their chemicals and Material Safety Data Sheets.  These are made available to anyone.

LIGHTING

In all Academic, Administrative and Residential buildings there is a push to eliminate inefficient lighting.  Moving to fluorescent type lighting and LED lighting is a changing culture at Smith.  We are replacing incandescent fixtures to fluorescent light fixtures and upgrading old fluorescent fixtures will new more efficient fixtures and bulbs.  Exit lights are being upgraded to LED type exit lights that use minimal electricity.  Building and Residential Services are assisting in the change. Also Building and Residential Services are recycling all fluorescent bulbs to recapture the toxic mercury in them.  Although one bulb does not pose a hazard, the thousands of bulbs that Smith College uses in accumulation does.  So we repackage these bulbs to be recycled in an environmentally safe manner.  Also see the "Green Team" here at Smith College and our recycling program.
