My research is in the field of theoretical condensed matter physics and I study collective quantum-mechanical phenomena using both numerical and analytical tools. My recent research has included studies of high-temperature superconductivity, the quantum properties of ultra-cold atoms, and the behavior of quantum magnets.
I enjoy teaching across the physics curriculum and strive to integrate exploration with application and to bring a field that is often considered abstract into my students' daily lives. I joined the Smith College faculty after ten years at Wellesley College and my position is shared with UMass Amherst: I currently teach two courses in the UMass Physics Department each fall semester and two courses in the Smith Physics Department each spring.
In addition to good coffee and great beer, I enjoy hiking and growing
hot peppers.
