Professor Emeritus of Philosophy
My research interests fall almost entirely in moral philosophy (both metaethics and normative ethics) and in philosophy of law. My present long-term project is to refurbish common moral faculty theory, which is the view that all humanity shares an ability (be it Reason or Sentiment or something else again) of discovering moral truth. Commonalism once dominated secular and theological metaethics but has largely been neglected in this century. I think this attitude badly mistaken.
