In 1996, under the auspices of the Consortium
for Educational Excellence through Partnerships (CEEP) Smith entered into partnership
with The Young Women’s Leadership High School of East Harlem, a newly founded
public school serving girls in grades seven through 12. Since that time, Smith and
TYWLHS have enjoyed a vibrant relationship. Each summer 10 or more TYWLHS students
attend the Summer Science and Engineering Program for high school girls; their participation
is made possible in part by the generous support of the Young
Women’s Leadership (YWL) Foundation. In addition, faculty from TYWLHS attend
professional development workshops through the Summer Institutes for Educators. Each
January, Smith students journey to TYWLHS as part of the Urban Education Initiative.
The following spring, students and the guidance staff from TYWLHS attend college-planning
workshops through College Preludes, a program hosted on the Smith campus by the Office
of Admission.

With the support and visionary leadership of the YWL
Foundation, the network of all-girls’ schools is growing. In December of 1999
the Chicago Board of Education awarded a charter to the Young
Women's Leadership Charter School of Chicago (YWLCS), the only all-girls public
school in the city. Working in partnership with YWLCS and Smith alumna Linda
Salisbury '78, Smith developed STEP UP (Summer Talent Exploration Program – Unleashing
Potential). This week-long program brings middle school girls to the Smith campus
for workshops and activities that help them explore their talents and interests while
learning about college. The program includes:
- visiting the historic home of poet Emily Dickinson
- viewing the night sky at the Smith College observatory
- developing public speaking and presentation skills
- exploring art, drama, and science
- discussing adolescent girls’ health and wellness issues through the By
Girls, For Girls project
- learning about financial management and planning a budget
In 2006, STEP UP was expanded to include girls from
the Chestnut Accelerated Middle School of Springfield, MA.
STEP UP is made possible through the generosity of The Salisbury Foundation.
