Urban Education Initiative Fellowship

Dates:  January 2009 (Interterm)
Place:  Public schools in Springfield, New York City, Chicago, Boston
Description:   Smith students can apply for a fellowship to volunteer during J-term in an urban public school classroom.

"Bauhaus in the House!" Family Day at SCMA

Date:  Saturday, November 1, 2008, 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Place:  Smith College Museum of Art
Description:   This event will include free admission, free snacks, and free hands-on art projects facilitated by Smith student volunteers. The project topics are based on arts and crafts done at the Bauhaus, a German art school (1919-1933) where artists such as Paul Klee and Vassily Kandinsky lived and worked.   Two family memberships will be raffled off at the end of the event.

Volunteers Sought for CONNECTIONS

Dates:  Fall 2008 and Spring 2009 semesters
Place:  Holyoke, Massachusetts
Description:   The Office of Educational Outreach is seeking tutors and other volunteers for after-school programs in Holyoke Public Schools.

Needed:  German Tutor

Dates:  Fall 2008 semester
Place:  Northampton, Massachusetts
Description:   The Office of Educational Outreach is seeking a tutor for a high school student in German.  The tutoring sessions would be Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, from 10:20 to 11:30 at the Florence Learning Center.

2009 Summer Science and Engineering Program

Dates:  June 28-July 25, 2009
Place:  Smith College
Description:   Since 1990, nearly 1,500 girls representing 44 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and 47 foreign countries have participated in the SSEP. After the program, girls report that they return to high school better prepared to tackle tough science courses, and better informed about what to expect in college. Participants in the program are taught by Smith faculty, live in a college house alongside Smith undergraduate interns, and have access to all campus facilities. Research courses include investigations in architecture, astronomy, biology, biochemistry, chemistry, computer engineering, women's health, and writing.
