2010 Science Teaching Fellowship

Dates:  January 2010 (Interterm)
Place:  Public schools in the Northampton area
Description:  Have you ever thought about teaching science?  Would you like to help enhance science education in the local schools?  There is a new paid fellowship opportunity during Interterm that will offer both.  The model for the new program places up to five teams of two Smith undergraduates in local schools to deliver one or more activities that they have developed in consultation with the K-12 host teacher, a Smith College faculty or staff content advisor, and the Science Center Educational Outreach Coordinator.

2009-10 Urban Education Initiative Fellowship

Dates:  January 2010 (Interterm)
Place:  Public schools in Springfield, New York City, Chicago, Boston
Description:   Smith students can apply for a fellowship to volunteer during J-term in an urban public school classroom.

2010 Summer Science and Engineering Program

Dates:  July 4-31, 2010
Place:  Smith College, Northampton, Massachusetts
Description:   Since 1990, nearly 1,600 girls representing 44 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and 50 foreign countries have participated in the SSEP. After the program, girls report that they return to high school better prepared to tackle tough science courses, and better informed about what to expect in college. Participants in the program are taught by Smith faculty, live in a college house alongside Smith undergraduate interns, and have access to all campus facilities. Research courses include investigations in architecture, astronomy, biology, biochemistry, chemistry, computer engineering, women's health, and writing.
