Student Leadership Awards
The student leadership awards, co-hosted by the Office of Student Engagement and the Student Government Association, is designed to recognize and honor the contributions that student leaders, student organizations and advisors make to student life at Smith.

Eligibilty
Students are eligible for 10 awards and faculty and staff are eligible for one.
Awards Committee
Award winners are chosen from a committee comprised of students, faculty and staff.

The Awards
Advisor of the Year
This award recognizes an organization advisor who embodies the ideals of working with a dedicated group of students. This person plays an active role in the organization through participation in meetings, events and organization efforts.
Consideration for recognition is based on the following criteria:
- Must have served as an advisor to the recognized student organization for a minimum of one full semester.
- Must display commitment to furthering the goals of the organization by giving excellent guidance and advice.
- Has demonstrated leadership skills and ability.
- Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively.
- Demonstrate the ability to work cooperatively within the community.
- Has a willingness to go beyond the call of duty.
Outstanding Community Service
This award recognizes the effort of a student or recognized student organization in the development of an ongoing or one-time community service project or program.
Consideration for recognition is based on the following criteria:
- If a student nominiee, must be a full time student in good academic standing at the time of application and have a minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.
- Have demonstrated leadership skills and ability as a volunteer, organization member or student employee.
- Student participation in program development, planning, implementation, and evaluation of service activities.
- Effective use of available resources, including financial, human, and logistical resources.
- Impact of service on meeting community needs.
- Consideration will be given to organizations whose mission is not exclusive to community service.
Outstanding House President
This award recognizes a student house president who has demonstrated excellence in their contribution to the Smith community through their leadership of a house community.
Consideration for recognition is based on the following criteria:
- Is a full time student in good academic standing at the time of application.
- Has a minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.
- Holds the position of House President.
- Has made a significant contribution to their house community through program development and activities in collaboration with the members of their house.
- Has demonstrated leadership skills and ability.
- Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively.
- Demonstrate the ability to work cooperatively with the house community and staff.
- Has a willingness to go beyond the call of duty.
Outstanding Student Employee
This award recognizes a student employee for their contributions to the Smith College community through their initiative, consistency, reliability and commitment to professionalism.
Consideration for recognition is based on the following criteria:
- Enrolled full-time and in good academic standing at the time of application.
- Have a minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.
- Employed by Smith College for 8-12 hours a week.
- Takes initiative and sets an example for student co-workers.
- Dedication to professionalism.
- Exhibits creativity and reliability in the work place.
Outstanding Student Leader
This award recognizes an outstanding student leader who has demonstrated excellence in academic growth and achievement, as well as excellence in their contribution to the Smith community through their leadership and participation in campus activities.
Consideration for recognition is based on the following criteria:
- Be enrolled full time and in good academic standing at the time of the application.
- Have a minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.
- Hold a significant leadership position on campus as a volunteer, organization member or student employee.
- Have made a significant contribution to the Smith campus community.
- Have demonstrated leadership skills and ability.
- Demonstrate the ability to prepare other leaders.
- Have a willingness to go beyond the call of duty.
- Have a positive attitude toward Smith College.
Outstanding Student Organization
This award recognizes the positive impact on the Smith community and the outstanding accomplishments of a recognized student organization.
Consideration for recognition is based on the following criteria:
- Organization effectiveness based on stated purposes and goals.
- Positive impact on the campus community.
- Commitment towards understanding and addressing of student concerns and needs.
- Commitment towards ongoing individual member and organizational development.
- Evidence of encouraging and promoting student input and participation in the organization.
- Effective relationships with faculty and administrators.
- Innovative services, projects, and programs initiated and provided by the organization for the campus and/or community.
- Evidence of a commitment to excellence.
Pioneer
This award recognizes an individual student who most widely represents the symbolic athletic vision of a Pioneer, one who has embraced new challenges and/or succeeded amidst significant obstacles.
Consideration for recognition is based on the following criteria:
- Is a full time student in good academic standing at the time of application.
- Has a minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.
- A student who has promoted the advancement of the College community through their direct or indirect involvement in Smith athletics.
- Have demonstrated leadership skills and ability as a volunteer, organization member or student employee.
- Overcame individual adversity.
- Evokes the concept of collaboration.
- Evidence of academic and/or extra-curricular determination.
Programming Excellence
This award recognizes innovative and outstanding achievements in the planning and presentation of a program by a student organization.
Consideration for recognition is based on the following criteria:
- Effective use of college resources.
- The program must have been administered and managed by an organization where students are significantly, if not completely, involved with the decision making, planning, implementation and presentation of program. Note: Faculty or administrative personnel may be involved in an advisory capacity.
- Evidence of promotion and marketing of the program to students (i.e., posters, fliers, newspaper ads, etc).
- Consideration will be given to those programs which reach a diverse group of student audiences.
- The clarity and achievement of the program’s stated goals and objectives.
- Number in attendance.
Social Justice Advocate
This award recognizes an individual for their demonstrated commitment to issues of social justice in the Smith College and greater community.
Consideration for recognition is based on the following criteria:
- Is a full time student in good academic standing at the time of application.
- Has a minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.
- Have demonstrated leadership skills and ability as a volunteer, organization member or student employee.
- Participation in educational or activist programs and/or events on campus or in the community.
- Willingness to challenge systems of injustice.
- Commitment to ongoing education on the topic of social justice through participation in available educational opportunities.
- Possesses a broad definition of diversity and social justice.
- Commitment to making Smith College and/or the broader community a welcoming and positive environment for all.
Sustainable Leadership
This award recognizes an individual, organization or house community who represents the ideals of sustainable leadership through advocacy, programming or community events.
Consideration for recognition is based on the following criteria:
- Is a full time student in good academic standing at the time of application.
- Has a minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.
- Has made a significant contribution to the Smith community through sustainable program development and activities.
- Have demonstrated leadership skills and ability as a volunteer, organization member or student employee.
- Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively.
- Demonstrate the ability to work cooperatively within the community
- Has a willingness to go beyond the call of duty.
- Has a positive attitude towards Smith College.
Unsung Hero
This award recognizes a student who works behind-the-scenes of a successful organization. The individual may not hold a significant leadership position in the organization. This award will be given to someone who consistently gives their all to an organization going above and beyond the call of duty.
Consideration for recognition is based on the following criteria:
- Is a full time student in good academic standing at the time of application.
- Has a minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.
- Is a member of a recognized student organization and does not hold a significant leadership position.
- Have demonstrated leadership skills and ability as a volunteer, organization member or student employee.
- Demonstrates a strong commitment to the organization.
- Positively influences the organization from behind the scenes.
- Has a positive attitude toward Smith College and the organization.
- Has a strong attendance record at organization meetings and events.
- Completes tasks and duties with a high level of quality.
