Student Leadership Awards

The Student Leadership Awards, co-hosted by the Office of Student Engagement and the Student Government Association, recognize and honor the contributions that student leaders, student employees, recognized student organizations, club sports, house communities and faculty/staff advisors make to student life at Smith and the global community.

The 2014 Student Leadership Awards Reception and Dessert Ceremony will be held on Tuesday, April 15, 2014, at 7 pm in the Campus Center Carroll Room.

2014 Nominees

Eligibility

Students are eligible for 10 of the 12 awards, and staff and faculty are eligible for two.

All students nominees must be in good academic and social standing, have made a positive contribution to the Smith Community and have gone above and beyond the call of duty.

All faculty and staff nominees must have made a positive contribution to the Smith Community and have gone above and beyond the call of duty.

Student Awards

Outstanding Community Service

This award recognizes the effort of a student, recognized student organization, athletic team, club sport, house community, or a non-credit class in the development of an ongoing or one-time community service project or program.

Consideration for recognition is based on the following criteria:

  • Evidence of participation in program development, planning, implementation, and evaluation of service activities.
  • Evidence of effective use of available resources, including financial, human, and logistical resources.
  • Evidence of impact of service on meeting local or global community needs.
  • Verification from service agency where service was provided (letter of recommendation or contact information)

Outstanding House President

This award recognizes an elected student house president who has demonstrated excellence in their contribution to the Smith community through their leadership of a house community.

Consideration for recognition is based on the following criteria:

  • Mentors the community and fosters the development of positive relationships within the house
  • Makes significant contributions to their house community through program development and activities in collaboration with the members of their house.
  • Ensures that the house community has met requirements and expectations of the college and is in good social standing

Outstanding Student Employee

This award recognizes a student employee for their contributions to the Smith College community through their initiative, consistency, reliability and commitment to professionalism.

Consideration for recognition is based on the following criteria:

  • Holds an on-going student employee position at Smith College. (Spot job employees will not be considered.)
  • Takes initiative and sets an example for student co-workers.
  • Demonstrates consistent professionalism and care for work environment.
  • Exhibits creativity and reliability in the work place.

Outstanding Student Leader

This award recognizes an outstanding student leader who has demonstrated excellence in academic growth and achievement, as well as excellence in global engagement and contribution to the Smith community through their leadership and participation in campus activities.

Consideration for recognition is based on the following criteria:

  • Holds a significant leadership position on campus in a recognized student organization, club sport, athletic team, house community or student employment position.
  • Makes significant contributions to the Smith campus community upholding and advancing the mission and vision of the College.
  • Demonstrates the ability to prepare, motivate and impact other student leaders.
  • Evidence of a positive image and presense in the Smith and global community.
  • Have a minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.

Outstanding Student Organization

This award recognizes the consistent, positive impact on the Smith and global community and the outstanding accomplishments of a recognized student organization.

Consideration for recognition is based on the following criteria:

  • Demonstrates organization effectiveness based on stated purposes and goals.
  • Evidence of commitment towards understanding and addressing student concerns and needs.
  • Evidence of commitment towards individual members and organizational development.
  • Evidence of encouraging and promoting student input and participation in the organization.
  • Evidence of innovative services, projects, and programs initiated and provided by the organization for the campus and/or community.
  • Evidence of positive and effective relationships with faculty and administrators.
  • Letter of recommendation or support from a faculty, staff or community member in support of the nomination

Pioneer Spirit

This award recognizes an individual student, recognized student organization, club sport, or house community who most widely represents the symbolic athletic vision of a Pioneer.

Consideration for recognition is based on the following criteria:

  • A student who has promoted the advancement of the College community through their direct or indirect involvement in Smith athletic teams, club sports or support of these programs.
  • Embraces and supports the athetics and recreation mission.
  • Evokes the concept of collaboration and community engagement.

Programming Excellence

This award recognizes innovative and outstanding achievements in the planning and presentation of a program by a recognized student organization, club sport or house community.

Consideration for recognition is based on the following criteria:

  • The program must have been administered and managed by an organization where students are significantly, if not completely, involved with the decision making, planning, implementation and presentation of program. Note: Faculty or administrative personnel may be involved in an advisory capacity.
  • The clarity and achievement of the program’s stated goals and objectives.
  • Evidence of visibility through promotion and marketing of the program to the campus community through electronic or social media outlets, posters, flyers, newspaper ads, etc.
  • Evidence of creativity and impact on the campus and global community. Consideration will be given to those programs which reach a diverse group of student audiences.
  • Effective and appropriate use of college resources.

Social Justice Advocate

This award recognizes an individual, recognized student organization or house community for their demonstrated commitment to issues of social justice at Smith College and in the global community.

Consideration for recognition is based on the following criteria:

  • Demonstrates ability to act as a change agent and challenge systems of injustice.
  • Commitment to ongoing education on the topic of social justice through participation in available educational opportunities.
  • Endorses a broad definition of diversity and social justice.
  • Participation in educational or activist programs and/or events on campus or in the community.
  • Commitment to making Smith College and the global community a welcoming and positive environment for all.

Leadership in Environmental Sustainability

This award recognizes an individual, recognized student organization or house community who represents the ideals of sustainable leadership through advocacy, programming or community events.

Consideration for recognition is based on the following criteria:

  • Demonstrates environmentally sustainable practices
  • Makes efforts to shape and improve environmental sustainability for the Smith and global community.
  • Evidence of sustainable program development and activities.

Unsung Hero

This award recognizes a student who works behind-the-scenes of a successful recognized student organization, club sport or house community. This award will be given to someone who consistently gives their all to an organization going above and beyond the call of duty.

Consideration for recognition is based on the following criteria:

  • Works outside the scope of any formal position they may hold
  • Demonstrates a strong commitment to the organization or house community.
  • Positively influences the community from behind the scenes.
  • Has a strong attendance record at organization or house community meetings and events.
  • Completes tasks and duties with a high level of quality.

Faculty & Staff Awards

Adviser of the Year

This award recognizes a faculty or staff adviser who advises recognized student organization or a coach for a recognized club sport. This person embodies the ideals of working with a dedicated group of students.

Please note: This is NOT for academic advisers.

Consideration for recognition is based on the following criteria:

  • Serves as an advisor to a recognized student organization or coach to a recognized club sport, and has done so for a minimum of one full semester.
  • Displays commitment to furthering the goals of the organization or club sport by giving excellent guidance and advice.
  • Plays an active role in the organization through participation in meetings, events and organization efforts.

Supervisor of the Year

This award recognizes a faculty or staff supervisor who oversees a student employee or employees on campus. This person embodies the ideals of working with students in an employment setting, valuing the work a student does outside of the classroom to complement their academic pursuits.

Consideration for recognition is based on the following criteria:

  • Serves as a supervisor to student employees in an on campus office or department and has done so for a minimum of one full semester.
  • Displays commitment to furthering the professional development of students through meaningful work experiences.
