Training

Fall hires: All student employees hired are required to attend a training session before Orientation begins for the College. Students are expected to return the evening prior to the start of training to move into housing. Housing and meals are provided during this time. All student employees will be paid a stipend for the training time period.

Spring hires: All student employees hired are required to attend a training session before classes start in January. Students are expected to return the evening prior to the start of training to get settled. All student employees will be paid their hourly rate for this training.

Staff Development

Each student employee is expected to attend all required work orientation sessions prior to the start of each semester, work-related meetings, training sessions or activities that may be required during the semester. Staff development provides you with practical skill-building, leadership training and customer service. Staff development averages one hour in length and will be recorded as paid time.

Scheduling

Student employees in the Office of Student Engagement work an average of 8 to 10 hours per week. Each position is self-scheduled based on upon building coverage and event needs. Each position requires different hours and has different scheduling needs. Students use an online scheduling system to choose their work hour preferences taking into consideration the department's needs and the student's academic schedule. Once the schedule is created and published, the employee is solely responsible for knowing their schedule and meeting their assigned hours. Evening and weekend work is required of most positions.

Each employee is expected to work their assigned hours through the last day of classes for both the fall and spring terms. Students will be asked to sign up for shifts during finals week according to their final exam schedules.

Appearance

Your appearance is a reflection of the Smith College. Employees will be provided with and nametag and/or uniform shirt and will be expected to wear them during assigned work shifts.
