About the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service
In 1994 Congress passed the King Holiday and Service Act, designating the King Holiday as a national day of volunteer service. Instead of a day off from work or school, Congress asked Americans of all backgrounds and ages to celebrate Dr. King's legacy by turning community concerns into citizen action. The King Day of Service brings together people who might not ordinarily meet, breaks down barriers that have divided us in the past, leads to better understanding and ongoing relationships, and is an opportunity to recruit new volunteers for your ongoing work.

As an institution dedicated to and invested in social action, the Office of Multicultural Affairs would like to take the opportunity to hold the 2nd annual Smith College Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service event.  In honor of Dr. King’s legacy, we would like to send student, staff and faculty volunteer teams to conduct service in local organizations, in an attempt to make our Smith College observance of this Martin Luther King, Jr. Day more of what was intended.  Can you help us in this vital role of honoring Dr. King’s legacy?

The Office of Multicultural Affairs will sponsor an observance of the Day of Service on Saturday, February 7, 2009. We encourage anyone who chooses to celebrate on January 19th to do so. Service opportunities can be found using this linked search engine at the Corporation for National and Community Service.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the Smith College participation in the Day of Service, please feel free to contact the Office of Multicultural Affairs at oma@smith.edu.
