Smith offers students exceptional opportunities to exchange ideas and broaden their perspectives. One way we support these endeavors is by inviting to campus provocative visitors who can initiate lively conversations focusing on the cerebral - as well as the spiritual - that contribute to the diversity of life at Smith.

Here is a sampling of those who enlivened campus conversations recently:

Mayda del Valle, the first Latina to become Slam Champion at the internationally respected Nuyorican Poet’s Café. She is also the youngest poet and the first Latino person to win the Individual National Poetry Slam title in Seattle.

Nikki Giovanni, world-renowned poet and activist

Howard University Choir

Tim Wise, prominent writer and activist on issues of privilege

Lalo Alcaraz, political cartoonist

Tani Bruguera, performance artist

Lani Guinier, law professor and scholar

Gary Orfield, director of the Harvard Civil Rights Project

Juan Williams, political commentator
