Students with disabilities are evaluated for
admission according to the same criteria and high standards as all other applicants.
No inquiries will be made about disability and your disability need not be disclosed
prior to admission. Disability is not taken into consideration in the process of
admissions decisions. If you have questions about disability and admissions policies,
please contact the Office of Disability Services or Smith’s Admissions Office. If
you plan to be on campus for a visit you can call Office of Disability Services located
in College Hall 104 or visit the Admissions Office on College Lane. It is advisable
to call to set up an appointment if possible. We’d be happy to talk via telephone
or meet in person to answer your questions or concerns. If you would like to arrange
a meeting with the admissions staff or a tour of the campus and need accommodations
such as a sign language interpreter or mobility assistance getting around campus
please inform the Admissions staff two weeks in advance so that they may best prepare
for your visit.
Prior to admission, students with disabilities may talk or meet with the Disability Services Director to discuss any questions or concerns about disability accommodations or services needed. Simply contact the Office of Disability Services to set up a phone or in-person meeting with the Disability Services Director, Laura Rauscher, at (413) 585-2071 (Voice)/(413) 585-2072 (TTY/TDD) or lrausche@email.smith.edu.
While we strive to meet a wide range of student
needs, it is a good idea to openly discuss your specific needs with the Office of
Disability Services either before or during the admissions process to make sure that
Smith is the right choice for you. Information shared with the Disability Services
Office is confidential and will not be shared with anyone involved in the admissions
process. Smith’s philosophy and approach to accommodating students with disabilities is one that emphasizes independence, self-reliance, and self-advocacy. While the college has an important role in meeting the needs of students, it is expected that students will take an active role in the accommodation process.
Smith is a selective liberal arts college where
expectations are high that students arrive prepared academically and socially to
participate in a rigorous program of academic study as well as handle the responsibilities
of residential life. Students with disabilities must possess the independence and
maturity to manage their disability needs in this context. Staff in the Office of
Disability Services, Counseling, Jacobson Writing Center, Residential Life, Class
Deans, and others are available to assist students in making the transition to the
new academic and social responsibilities of college life. |
