To the Smith Community:
I am writing to announce the release of the Disability Access Report.
The year 2005 marked the 15th anniversary of the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act, one of the most comprehensive pieces of civil rights legislation in our nation‚s history. This important anniversary came at the critical juncture when the College‚s strategic planning process was getting underway. The planning process provided an impetus for the college to take stock of our efforts to assure equal access under disability non-discrimination laws.
The Office of Institutional Diversity and the Office of Disability Services worked for a year in cooperation with a newly constituted Disability Access Advisory Committee to develop a report on compliance at the college. The Disability Access and Inclusion Report provides the College with a mission for access, outlines guiding principles in key areas, and recommendations that are designed to help the college strengthen its efforts to assure equal access for persons with disabilities under the law.
The report‚s recommendations highlight the need to continue our good efforts in making necessary accommodations in and outside the classroom for individuals with disabilities, while being proactive in identifying and removing barriers to inclusion and participation in all that Smith has to offer. Equal access is integral to the mission of the college, to the programs and opportunities we provide, and to how we conduct ourselves as a community.
The Campus Climate Working Group will devote its March meeting to discussion of the report.
Sincerely,
Carol T. Christ
