RECENTLY ACCEPTED STUDENTS

If you have been accepted for admission at Smith College and would like to register with Disability Services, please send the Disability Identification Form (included in your acceptance packet) along with proper medical documentation to: Office of Disability Services, College Hall 104, Smith College, Northampton, MA, 01063. Proper documentation must be submitted in order to receive accommodations. Please look at our documentation information page and feel free to contact us if you have any questions concerning documentation.

Requests for services and accommodations must be made in a timely manner. Without sufficient advance notification and proper documentation, Disability Services may not be able to meet your requests. If you have been accepted and plan to enroll at Smith, please make every effort to contact our office well before you arrive on campus. It is particularly important to be in contact early in the summer if you need services such as sign language interpreters, alternative print materials, etc. so that services are in place when you arrive in the fall. January transfer students should contact us in the fall before your arrival.

Once you confirm your acceptance, you can arrange to meet or talk over the phone with the Disability Services Director prior to your arrival to develop a specific accommodation plan for the fall semester. Students accepted at Smith receive a Disability Identification Form in their admissions packet sent sometime in May. This form should be returned directly to the Office of Disability Services with current medical documentation or educational testing as appropriate. It is never too soon to begin assembling the medical information or educational testing you will need to document a disability under the Americans with Disabilities Act or Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act as they apply to colleges. There can be differences between what you received during high school under special education laws and what is required in college under civil rights laws. It is in your best interest to talk with the Disability Services Office at any college you are applying to early in the application process to discuss your needs.
