More Fellows Every Year

Last year Smith scholars raised their own bar by landing an unprecedented 42 fellowships totaling nearly $1 million.

This was the third straight year that the number of fellowship applicants and recipients increased at Smith, with 69 undergraduates and 14 alumnae submitting 90 applications to foundations. The success rate of nearly 50 percent is well ahead of the national average, notes Don Andrew, coordinator for fellowships and grants.

"Our success rate has improved for the past three years," he says, "not only in terms of the quantity of fellowships for our students, but also the quality of fellowship applications."

The increase in fellowships for Smith has correlated with the college's efforts to improve its fellowships support program, says Andrew, who came to Smith in 2001. He sees the increased involvement of faculty members in advising students on their applications as an essential factor in the recent success.

The impressive list of Smith undergraduates and alumnae named to prestigious fellowships last year was headlined by a record nine Fulbright Fellows. Before 2001, Smith had averaged two Fulbright fellowships a year, notes Andrew. During the past three years, Smith applicants have received 22 Fulbrights. -- ESW
