Noted Documentary Photographs at Smith Depict 20th-Century Civil Rights Struggles

images of an immigration border patrol in 1936 by E.O. Goldbeck; segregated drinking fountains in Albany, Georgia, in 1962; and the Martin Luther King funeral procession in 1968 by Ernest C. Withers are among the photographs to be displayed October 20 to November 7 in "In the Shadow of Intolerance," an exhibition at Smith College's Hillyer Hall gallery.

The 22 photographs are from the collection of Samuel Zaitlin of Biddeford, Maine, and have rarely been displayed in public. They are coming to Smith in conjunction with "What's Next? American Pluralism and the Civic Culture: Challenges and Proposals" a national conference on race and ethnicity being hosted by the college November 4-6.

Zaitlin, along with Alice Hearst, assistant professor of government and Peter Rose, Sophia Smith Professor of Sociology and Anthropology and conference chair, will host a gallery discussion at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, November 3.

"I've found that the two most powerful mediums for conveying the sweep, the scope and the intensity of history are photographs and documentary films," says Zaitlin, explaining why he assembled the photographs in this collection. "I never saw the collection as something to fill a house with. Rather, it only made sense to me if these memories of the 20th century could be shared with others, and their intensity felt."

The exhibition is free and open to the public. Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday; 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday; and noon to midnight Sunday.
