Smith College: There’s an App for That ™

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – Smith College recently launched its first iTunes app, SCDirectory, adding a local twist to Apple’s popular catchphrase “There’s an app for that.”

The application, which allows users to search the college's on-line directory of faculty, staff and students using an iPhone or iPod is now available free on the Apple App Store.

The directory works in the same way as its Internet counterpart, allowing users to search for Smith community members by entering either their name or department. SCDirectory provides the same privacy protections as the regular online Campus Directory: only registered users on the college network are able to view directory photographs.

SCdirectory is the first in what is hoped to be a series of mobile apps that students, faculty, visitors, parents and alumnae can use to quickly access useful campus information. Under consideration are apps for the daily dining room menus and the campus map.

“This represents a commitment by Smith to providing useful information in the ways people are increasingly seeking it,” said Herb Nickles, executive director of Information Technology Services. “Smith is meeting people wherever they are.”

Smith College educates women of promise for lives of distinction. One of the largest women’s colleges in the United States, Smith enrolls 2,800 students from nearly every state and 62 other countries.
