Media Alert: Commencement Broadcast Live Online

NORTHAMPTON, Mass - When President Carol T. Christ announced the name of this year's commencement speaker to students, the crowd went wild and the news immediately resounded through cyberspace.

Rachel Maddow, the political analyst and media host who rose to national prominence after launching her career on local radio, clearly has a strong following. She was recently profiled in People magazine, and her selection as Smith's speaker will soon be featured in US News & World Report.

The college has made several provisions to enable everyone who wants to view Maddow's speech during the 132nd commencement ceremony at 10 a.m. Sunday, May 16, will be able do so.

To ensure that there is ample space in the Quadrangle (or ITT, in case of rain) for graduates and their families, the college will simulcast the ceremony to John M. Greene Hall on Elm Street, rain or shine, and make it available via live Web stream on the Smith Web site.

  • Please share this information with your readers / viewers so that they will be aware of the opportunity.
  • Contact the News Office if you plan to cover the event so that I can make accommodations for your reporters and cameras.
