Preparations
for Hurricane Sandy
The college’s Emergency
Response Team met today to prepare for the
possibility that the region will be affected by Hurricane
Sandy at the beginning of next week.
In advance of that possibility,
Smith also encourages students, faculty and staff to consider
planning now for potential interruptions in power and transportation.
Ways to prepare would include keeping cell phones
charged and securing necessary prescription medication and
personal items.
The Emergency Response Team
will continue to monitor the track of the storm throughout
the weekend and update the Smith community, as
necessary, through the following modes of communication:
- Text,
voicemail and email updates to students, faculty and
staff through the emergency response system, as warranted;
- Online updates on the and social media, such as ;
- In-person updates from
the Campus Life staff who are in student houses and
dining rooms.

Updates
may include such possibilities as designating the Campus
Center as an emergency shelter, relocating students, changes
in dining services, canceling classes, and closing the college.
If the Campus Center is designated as a shelter, Campus Life
staff will maintain an information table there.
The Emergency
Response Team is looking into identifying campus
locations where students would be able to recharge cell phones
for emergency communication in the case of a prolonged power
outage.
In case of all emergencies,
contact the Campus Police dispatch center, (413)
585-2490. If the phone line is not operational, call (413)
538-2304. |
