Colorful Collaboration
Ada Comstock Scholar Cassandra
Holden '10 last year for her proposal to create a public artwork in collaboration
with students at The Care Center in Holyoke, an alternative
education program for pregnant and parenting teens who have
dropped out of high school.
The Magic Grant is intended
to help Comstock Scholars reach their
potential by funding internships, creative and artistic projects,
research and travel. Holden's grant, for $23,000, was the
second awarded in the program.
Holden and her student collaborators
recently finished the product of their creation, an art installation
in the atrium of the Kittredge Center at Holyoke Community
College, formally presented on January 25.

Cassandra
Holden AC'10 worked with 15 girls at The Care Center
in designing, fabricating and installing a large, colorful
mobile. |
|
The
mobile, with the theme of "Alechmy," was based on small
models created by the students, combining the best
elements of each design. |

 |
Installation
of the mobile took place throughout fall 2012, including
cutting, crumpling, sanding, painting and, shown here,
hanging pieces high above the atrium floor. |
|
The final, installed artwork, filling
the Kittredge Center with color, represents Holden's
intention of empowering and inspiring the students
to "think big and achieve their goals."
