Chinese
Art Expert to Deliver 9th Annual Miller Lecture
Northampton, Mass.—The Smith
College Museum of Art (SCMA) will welcome Sonya S. Lee, an
expert on Chinese art and visual culture, speaking on “Time
and Nature in the Visual Culture of Tang China” for the 9th
Annual Miller Lecture in Art and Art History on Wednesday,
Nov. 2.
The event, which is free and
open to all in the Smith community and the public, will take
place at 7 p.m. in Weinstein Auditorium, Wright Hall.
The
Miller Lecture is a distinguished lectureship established
in memory of Smith alumna Dulcy Blume Miller ’46. The fund enables the museum to bring a leading
artist, art historian, or architect to campus each year to
give a public lecture and to take part in classes.
Lee’s
lecture is given in conjunction with the current SCMA exhibition
"Transcending Boundaries: The Art and Legacy of Tang China,"
part of the Yale University Art Gallery Collection-Sharing
Initiative.
Sonya Lee is an associate professor
of Chinese art and visual culture at the University of Southern
California, and a Paul Mellon Senior Fellow (2011-2012) studying “Culture
and Nature: Cave Temples of Sichuan” at the Center for Advanced
Study in the Visual Arts, National Gallery of Art, Washington,
D.C.
