It's
Official: Smith Number One in Fulbrights
With
a record 19 Fulbright Fellows for 2011-12, Smith is the
top-producing college in the country, according to the Fulbright
Program and this week.
The Fulbright Program is a U.S.
Department of State program that seeks to develop global
leaders and protect academic freedom worldwide through educational
exchange.
Smith also set a new record
for its rate of success among Fulbright applicants, with
nearly 50 percent of its 40 applicants receiving a fellowship
with the renowned program, the most in any single year for
Smith.
During the past seven years,
Smith has led the nation overall among top-ranking colleges
in the number of fellowships, also leading the nation among
all higher education institutions, including Ivy League universities,
in its success rate. With this year’s
Fulbright Fellows, Smith has produced 210 Fulbrighters since
1970, 129 during the past 10 years.
Smith’s success rate of 47.5 percent is
more than 2.5 times higher than the national average of about
17 percent.
Smith’s Fulbright Fellows will
represent the United States in 14 countries: Australia, Brazil,
Chile, Egypt, Estonia, Germany, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kuwait,
Korea, Netherlands, Peru, Poland, Russia, and Turkey.
With 42 applicants to the Fulbright
Program this fall, Smith broke its record of 40 applicants,
set last year. |
