Face Time: Angela Nunez ’11

Mary Caroline Smith ’11

Emily Brown ’11

Where are you from?
Western Maryland, where the Appalachian Mountains rule everything from the weather to one's mood.

What is your major?
English, with a Spanish minor.

Did you always know you wanted to come to Smith?
No, but a family friend who is an alum insisted that I check it out and I fell in love the moment I stepped on campus.

Now the fun stuff. Who gets the most face time with you?
My wonderfully supportive and patient boyfriend.

Do you have a nickname?
Statue—my boyfriend's friend came up with it because of the face I make when I'm angry.

What are you reading now?
Classical Indian plays by Kalidasa, numerous books by Virginia Woolf (for my seminar) The Canterbury Tales (in the original Middle English—I'm quite proud of myself), and Elizabeth Bishop poems. Like I said, I'm an English major, so I'm reading more than the average student should ever be asked to read at once. But I love it!

Do you eat fast food?
No. Especially not after seeing Food, Inc.

What do you miss most about home?
Riding my pony through the winding trails in the Appalachians.

What is your favorite movie?
The Lord of the Rings—all three of them, which I really consider one movie since it was filmed all at once.

If you suddenly had two hours of free time, what would you do?
Lose myself in the woods of New England, which I love almost as much as my woods back home.

What is your favorite wall hanging in your room?
A postcard with an old picture on it of a nude woman with a horse.

Do you consider yourself an urban, suburban or rural person?
Rural. I'm happiest when I've got a whole mountain or two to myself.

What's your favorite thing about where you grew up?
How rural it is and that it has all four seasons. Summer there is perfect because it doesn't get as hot as it does in New England and in the winter it gets even more snow.

What annoys the heck out of you?
When people chew with their mouths open. Also extremists and close-minded people—I've found that those two things usually go hand-in-hand.

Who are your role models?
My mother, who has survived a house fire, an abusive relationship, and breast cancer, and is still the most loving, open person you will ever meet. She can find the good in anyone.
