Construction
on Campus
Comstock and Wilder houses were
beautifully renovated in 2000, including installation of
gas fireplaces in the living rooms. This fall, residents
of the houses will return to find completely refurbished
basements, including new rec rooms,
kitchens, laundry rooms, bathrooms, corridors and stairwells.
Meanwhile, the Tyler House living room and foyer, including
its grand central stairway, are also being redone.
And at Chapin House, the living room will receive fresh paint, some new soft furniture and recessed LED (dimmable)
ceiling lighting. Gary Hartwell is overseeing this summer's
10-house renovation project.

Comstock
and Wilder, twin houses built
in 1928, share a covered front
entrance, a bell tower and back wings, which surround
a courtyard. |

A
fresh coat of paint will brighten the basement corridors
and stairwells of both houses. |

The recreation rooms in the basements of both houses
are being completely refurbished
to create attractive, usable facilities (Wilder rec
room shown on the left, Comstock on right).

The student kitchens near the rec rooms
have received new paint and flooring.
House residents elected to retain the same
warm wall colors in all of the rooms
being renovated.

The
basement bathrooms in both houses have been refurbished... |
|
...as have the laundry rooms. Gloria,
the friendly ghost that haunts Comstock, as legend
has it, will be
more comfortable now (or not?) in the new basement.

One
of the Green Street residences, Tyler House's origins
stretch back to 1898. The dining hall
is often frequented by athletes returning from practice
in the evenings. |

The large
living room, inside and to the right,
was refurbished in 1993 and is getting another fresh
coat of paint and new flooring this summer. |

Tyler's
lavish foyer, with its Victorian central staircase,
will look like new when students return in September. |

The
corridors leading to the dining room and the back porch
are getting much-needed makeovers this summer. |

Chapin
House, built in 1903, is situated in the heart of campus,
across from the Campus Center, making most classes
only a short walk away. |
|
The living
room, with its large bay of windows, is slated for renovations,
to begin soon, after residents of a new summer program
return home. |
