SACSA
Fundraising Provides Funds for Haiti
The Smith African & Caribbean
Students Association (SACSA) raised more than $3,000 for
Haiti relief through events such as an auction and dinner
fundraiser on Feb. 13 (invitation letter below).
The past few weeks have been
filled with turmoil and grief. Many Smith College students
and faculty have been directly and indirectly affected by
the January 12 earthquake in Haiti. We are reminded by the
images of death, families left homeless on the streets,
the daily struggle to secure basics necessities such as food
and water, and the many children orphaned in this catastrophe.
The January earthquake has catapulted Haiti onto the forefront
of global consciousness, compelling the world to reach out
in aid.
Although we cannot be on the
ground to directly aid in relief work, it is our duty as
global citizens to help our sisters and brothers overcome
this tragedy. We all have to do our part. The Smith African
and Caribbean Students Association would like to support
the relief efforts. With the help of students, faculty, and
staff, SACSA has organized an auction/dinner in response
to a request by the Rev. Stephen Davenport, of St. John's
Episcopal Church on Elm Street, for help rebuilding
Holy Trinity Music School in Port-au-Prince, which was completely
destroyed. Les Petits Chanteurs, the chorus group from Holy
Trinity, performed at the Smith's Helen Hills Hills Chapel
in 2007.
As an organization and as students,
we would like to invite you to attend SACSA’s
Auction for Haiti. The event will feature items and dishes
from African and Caribbean cultures. Your help is needed.
We hope you will consider joining our effort to help a Haitian
community in need.
Sincerely, members of Smith
African & Caribbean Students Association
