5-Day Symposium Celebrates Asian American Voices

Smith’s Asian Student Association will host Asian American Voices 2010, a five-day symposium with lectures, performances and film screenings focusing on issues around Asian and Asian American life.

The series, which begins Monday, March 22, will culminate with a concert, on Friday, March 26, featuring bands Beau Sia, Magnetic North + Taiyo Na, and IlL-Literacy. All event, except the final concert, are free.

The complete symposium schedule is as follows:

Monday March 22

Keynote lecture “New Challenges and Directions for APIA Studies, Organizing and Activism in the 21st Century.” Diana Wu. 7:30 p.m., Neilson Browsing Room

Tuesday, March 23

Film screenings Tao Nakamura's A Song for Ourselves (35 mins.), and Pilgrimage (22 mins.). Topic: Japanese Internment, APIA immigration history/stories. 7:30 p.m., Neilson Browsing Room

Wednesday, March 24

Lecture "South Asian Politics Within the Asian American Community and Afro-Asian Connections." Sujani Reddy, Five College assistant professor of Asian Pacific American studies. 7:30-9 p.m., Graham Hall

Thursday, March 25

Open Mic/Poetry Slam Guest Performer: Taiyo Na on acoustic. Students are invited to come and share their poems and stories. 7:30-9 p.m., Graham Hall

Friday, March 26

Grand Finale Concert Featuring Performances by Beau Sia, Magnetic North + Taiyo Na, and ilL-Literacy. Tickets, $5 in advance (available at events during the week), $10 at the door. 7-11 p.m., John M. Greene Hall
