JYA
Q&A: Students Comment on Election 2008

Rachel Weston (on far
right) poses with fellow JYA students on Omaha Beach, Normandy. |
Gate: How
did you spend election night?
Rachel Weston: I
spent election night on the couch watching the French television
coverage as well as
coverage on the computer. I initially went to a party being
hosted by members of the Democratic Party here in Paris,
but there was an enormous crowd and a line that was moving
quite slowly, so a couple of my friends came home with me
to watch the election coverage from there. We were up
all night long.
Gate: How
would you describe the interest in the presidential election
where you are?
CG: There was
definietly a lot of interest in the elections here. My host
parents often talked to me about the upcoming elections and
I saw headlines in the papers each day dealing with them.
The reaction was overwhelmingly in favor of Obama's win.
Everyone I know, both French and American, was incredibly
happy.
Gate: Did
you vote by absentee ballot? When did you send that in?
CG: I did vote
by absentee ballot, and I sent it in three or so weeks before
the election..
