From the days Smith first opened
its doors, Valentines have been exchanged by students at
the college. Some have been elaborate, other plain, some
large, others tiny, some were store-bought while most were
handmade. tokens of endearment included not only cards, but
flowers, candy and other items. A telegraph messenger once
delivered six live ducks, a glass of water, and a ham sandwich
to some lucky Smith woman.
