Julia McWilliams (Child), Class of 1934

This Thursday, Nov. 15, Smith College celebrates the legacy of Julia Child ’34 with a presentation by the Kitchen Sisters at 4:15 p.m. in the Campus Center Carroll Room and a gala reception afterward. Meanwhile, recipes of Julia Child and the Kitchen Sisters will be featured throughout the day at the Campus Center Café, Smith College Club, and residence dining rooms.

Julia McWilliams arrived at Smith from her hometown of Pasadena, Calif., in 1930. She was an active Smith student, playing basketball, teaching at the People's Institute and working as a stage director for the Dramatics Association. She was also a member of Student Council, and whistled down errant grass walkers as a Grass Cop. Her culinary experience began in college as chair of the Refreshment Committee for Senior Prom and Fall Dance.

Here are some glimpses of Julia McWilliams Child from her days as an undergraduate and later visits back to campus.
