Now Available: the Smith College Ring

Orders can be placed for the Smith College ring January 30-February 1 at Grécourt Bookshop

No matter where they go, Smith students and graduates can now carry with them a memento of their time in college -- a symbol that they can look at and feel any time of the day.

The official Smith College ring, a stately reminder to those who matriculate at the college, will last its owners a lifetime. Years and great distances removed from the college, alumnae might realize their shared past with recognition of each other’s rings. At college reunions into the far future, classmates can compare and contrast their rings engraved with their year of graduation.

The Smith College ring has been around for a long time. But not until 2004 has the college’s official ring sported a design created by Smith students. That’s the year class presidents joined several other students in choosing a simple, elegant design, a ring embossed with images of the Grécourt Gates and the words “Smith College, 1871.”

“The students were inspired by a recent speech by Carol Christ about the legacy of the Grécourt Gates,” says Jad Davis, executive assistant to the director of the Alumnae Association, who is overseeing student orders for the ring.

“When you look at the Gates,” said President Christ on September 4, 2002, “I would like you to remember that those who erected them felt that walking into Smith carries with it the responsibility of walking out into a world that needs your energy and help. We should each look for the gates of Smith that lead out to the world around us. Find your own Grécourt Gates.”

All Smith juniors, seniors, second-semester sophomores and Ada Comstock scholars in good standing are eligible to order the Smith College ring in either silver or gold. A representative from Balfour Ring Company, the ring supplier, will be taking orders Tuesday through Thursday, Jan. 30, through Thursday, Feb. 1, at Grécourt Bookshop.

“Students wearing this ring will proudly demonstrate the essence of Smith women: bright, confident, independent, articulate, and compassionate,” said Carrie Cadwell Brown, executive director of the Alumnae Association, which sponsors the ring, in a Balfour Company brochure.
